˜Night' shows that even in brutalizing conditions people still be have humanely. To what extent do you agree? Discuss. Point of View Introduction ˜Night' demonstrates how easily people succumb to the brutalizing conditions created by their captors. The Jews commit unspeakable horrors to their inmates, in order to survive. This can be perceived as being ˜weak' as opposed to being ˜evil'. However, there were some individuals who were strong enough to not surrender to the brutalizing conditions. Therefore, humanity does exist even in tyrannical situations. Elie observes the behaviour of the individuals who behave in a compassionate and kind manner, and shows it himself. First paragraph What the Germans have done to dehumanize the Jews, and what they have done to make the conditions brutal. Started in the ghettos: the Jews were deprived of any right and basic necessities for survival. Then the conditions worsened at the camps: gender separation, then the Jews faced a merciless selection, which was held by Dr Mengele. Dr Mengele is the embodiment of evil “ "his cruel face, but nor devoid of intelligence . The two selections “ psychological torture. No food, water, shelter. The prisoner's identities were erased “ identical haircut, clothing, and tattoo. Reversal character development “ the Jews become beastlike. Second paragraph People who succumb to the tyrannical conditions of the camps “ what have they done that was inhumane. As a consequence of the Jews being dehumanized, they only care about their own survival. Jews of the camps started to commit unspeakable acts. This is because the Jews were motivated by food, fear and terror, because it is innate to survive. Examples The two Jews who executed the hangings in order to obtain more food. Rabbi Eliahou's and his son. Nameless father and his son. Even Elie thought of abandoning his father. Just wanting to eat, even when witnessing hangings.
