For centuries, America has been flooded with different types of people. With these people came different religions, beliefs, and languages. Foreigners come to America for the freedom and the opportunity to change their lives and make them better. Some people don't like that these immigrants, legal or illegal, have come into the country with their different ways. People in America believe that if these people are going to live in the country, they must have the same expectations as everyone else. One of these includes being able to speak English fluently. Tons of debates have come from making English the official language in the country. Many people frown upon or feel uncomfortable when they hear a foreign language because it’s not their own language. But the problem is that the English language wasn't the foundation of America. Many countries owned land around various parts of the United States, and that is where some of the foods and customs America has today came from. I believe there shouldn't be an official language due to the variety of people in America. Immigrants have been a part of American history for many years and even before the structure of America. Many cultures were living in various parts of the country before the English colonists came over and settled. Countries such as Spain and France owned different parts of the south. Mexicans occupied the areas of California, New Mexico, and Texas before they were taken away after the Spanish-American War. Other countries that were also part of the population were the Scottish, Dutch, Germans, and the Netherlands. Those countries lived in the northern areas like Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Over time, more people from these various countries came and settled. “This was caused by the different cultures already living in America sending letters back home telling friends and relatives to come be in a better country” (Martin and Midgley). During the next 20 years, over 750,000 German, British, and Irish immigrants arrived in the country. A small percentage of those Irish immigrants came to the country due to poverty and famine in their own country (Martin and Midgley). Many immigrants that came over to America also faced starvation and disease in the early stages of their arrival. Lots of things America has today were a result of the different countries and cultures being there. Religion and governmental ideas were also from other countries. The Spanish had their Christian beliefs and the Puritans set their religion in Massachusetts. The Germans and the Irish also brought over Roman Catholicism, which was the largest denomination in the 1850’s. Also some of the structure and ideas America has for the government comes from three main sources outside of the United States. The main three are Ancient Greece and Rome, English history, and European philosophers. American ideas and structures weren’t original, but came from different countries and the people living in America. Even though the immigrants that came over were welcomed, many problems arose by the increase of population. A lot of wars became common over land and taking others belonging from a different area. Years after the first start of immigration, people in the country started worrying about the legal and illegal immigrants coming over to America. “Over one million Mexican immigrants were sent back because of illegal entrance” (Martin and Midgley). This effect caused many laws to be put into place to restrict the amount of immigrants that can come over. As more people from other countries started to c
