In this text, “Notes of a Native Speaker”, the author, Eric Lui personally writes and discuses about his own experience, struggle with his background and questioning the idea of what makes a person an “American," from a young age to the adult that he is now. The speaker/ writer, Eric Liu’s purpose for writing this piece of text can be confusing at times, but he makes it clearing towards the end as how the definition of being an American is something much more than what few words can define but instead its something special we all share. The tone of this text could be interpreted as a weird mix of didactic and solemn and also after reading this text, it is clear that the audience targeted by Eric Lui through this text is obviously men and women who are referred to are the first or second generation of their family living in this country, and might feel lost and disconnected with their old culture. I believe that the author, Eric Lui, used a mix of pathos and logos to persuade his audience and readers to simply help them understand his point of view and what he wanted to express from his past experiences. For example “ I dreamed of such hair. I imagined tossing my head back causally, to ease into place the one or two strands that had drifted from their position.” In this quote, Eric Lui tries to appeal to us through emotion and how he dreamt of such hair to help him fit in and feel less like an outsider, could be a fine example of pathos. Another great example for the use of logos in this text could be from this quote;” I could have spared myself a great deal of heartache had I understood this earlier, that the choice of race is not simply “embrace or efface”, the author, Eric expresses how that race is not our choice and cant change who we are, and that we are who we chose to be and continues to say that he would have saved a lot of unnecessary worrying if he had learned that lesson earlier in his life.
