Human nature is the way a human thinks, acts, and feels. Included in human nature is revenge, which is a natural human instance when a person inflicts harm on someone for a wrong suffered at their hands (Google). Revenge can be seen since WWI, when Francis Ferdinand was assassinated and Austria sought revenge. Also revenge can even be seen today. This leads to the question, was revenge ever justified? The answer to this question is yes, revenge is justified. This can be proven through Frankenstein and the world where revenge is a natural instinct for all creatures and cannot be avoided. When a baby is born it can be proven that the baby is innocent. If this baby was drinking from a bottle and it had been taken away, the baby might want to take revenge. This is a natural feeling because the baby does not know what is happening and only wants the bottle back. This can be connected to Frankenstein because when the monster was born he did have a guide that explained what is right and what is wrong. Furthermore, the monster felt abandoned by his creator and sought only love. Later on in the monsters life, he met a family that abandoned him and he felt enraged. “ tore me from his father, to whose knees I clung; transport of fury, he dashed me to the ground and struck me violently with a stick. I could have torn him limb from limb” (Page 124). As shown is this quote the innocent monster felt angry because he was torn away from his “friend." In this situation the monster is justified for revenge as a baby is for his bottle. Not only is revenge created through actions but it is also formed through trying to prevent it. For example, the government tries to prevent revenge by creating laws that punish the people who seek revenge. These laws can be seen as revengeful acts as themselves. An example is if someone murders another human being. Should the murder face a death penalty? If the murderer does then is the act itself not a vengeful
