World War II was a very big event in the history and development of the United States. The war brought change to many aspects of life in areas such as technology, women’s rights, and civil rights. Since World War II was such a large and broad war it was necessary to allow African Americans to fight in the war. For many African Americans fighting in the war they believed it was a chance for freedom and a hope for equality among everyone but little did they know that post war would become one of the biggest events in America’s History. African Americans fighting in the war are one of the most influential things that happened for the improvement of having equality but it was not until after the war that people realized that would not be the case. The unfair treatment African Americans went through before was just the beginning of the unfair freedom they would receive during and after war. By the year 1945, over 1.2 million African Americans were serving their country. At the time there African Americans were only supposed to be enlisted by the percentage of the population but that quickly changed. The high number of African Americans serving in the war helped the United States win. While in the war African Americans were vital in even the smallest positions such as doing maintenance and transportation to even fighting on the front line. One African American soldier wrote a letter to specifically an African American newspaper expressing his experience while in the war with the company’s executive officer. The young man wrote in his letter that he was told not to read a book by an African American and was not allowed to bring that around the company. This story directly shows that regardless of the fact that he was serving his country, he and his fellow company members were still looked as unequal to the whites.
