?During the Age of Enlightenment, a philosopher named Voltaire published "Candide," a French satire that criticizes many qualities of society. Some examples are money, relationships, slavery, evilness and religious review. Candide the main character in the story believes that in this world all things happen for a good reason. This philosophy in a way is mocked by the author as Candid takes it to extremes in some situations. Throughout his journey the people he encounters make him question if there is truly a God and if so, then why is there so much evil in the world? Growing up in a German castle of Westphalia, Candide had little knowledge of how the outside world functioned. A philosopher named Pangloss, became a mentor and taught him that all things happen for good. Candide would listen to him with great devotion and faith but soon would find out how cruel the world really is. After expressing his feelings to Cunegonde, the Baron’s daughter, he is kicked out and has no choice but to join the Bulgarian army. The King even relates metaphysician as the “ignorant of the world.” With so many massacres occurring Candide found an opportunity to flee to Holland. Throughout the book Candide spoke about Pangloss’s teaching that “there is no effect without a cause.” This simply outraged Protestants resulting being cursed at and embarrassed. An Anabaptist named Jacques took Candide into his home and employed him in a rug factory. The act of kindness gave Candide faith on Pangloss’s theory. After finding Pangloss sickly and deformed Candide finds out that Westphalia was attacked and everyone had died. Jacques was another person that disagreed with Pangloss’s theory. Jacques mentions, “Men have somehow corrupted Nature” and God never gave men weapons but men created them “in order to destroy themselves.” Traveling in a terrible storm at sea to Lisbon, Candide and Pangloss lose Jacques.
