In the article "The Homework Debate" by Patrick Marshall, it explains the ways that students are stressed by all of the homework that teachers assign to them. They have so much homework that they don't have time to just sit back and relax for a few minutes. There is not enough time in the day where they can finish homework at a decent hour. Instead they end up staying up late, stressing trying to figure out how to finish everything before it is due. They do not get enough sleep, because there is so much work to be done. Schools should limit the amount of homework these students have to do; it will cut down their stress tremendously. Some kids have after school activities that they participate in. They don't get to go home right after school to start on their homework. Bobby Nelson for example he has tennis matches every afternoon and right after he has rehearsals for a school production. He doesn't get home until 9 at night. When he gets home he hardly has time to eat, he’s exhausted from the day’s events. Being tired and knowing that you have to stay up later just to finish up your homework, can have a huge impact on someone. Nelson states that he would sometimes have three hours of work just for one class. Imagine how many hours all of the other classes required, to finish an assignment. The National Commission on Excellence in Education believes in giving the students a lot of homework. In order to graduate they called for tougher requirements. In other countries they go to school year round and have no complaints. They believe that the education isn't up to their standards and believe that their new requirements could improve these students. They would like for it to be longer school days, standardized tests given nationally, and more school days per year. Sometimes these children need a break from school.
