In Jamaica, there are customs and traditions that have been going on for centuries and still remain quite strong even today. One of these practices includes having dinner every night with family and saying "grace" before eating the food that will contribute to the nourishment of our bodies. However, moving to New York City, having dinner with family every night can some ways be described as "ancient" among the people of today. Looking for a house or apartment in the city that never sleeps is very interesting even for a twelve year old child. The first noticeable thing in every single house and apartment that was examined was the absence of a dining room. Where would we fit that enormous monstrosity of a dining table that we planned to buy? Where was all the family going to fit on occasions like Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner? It didn't make sense. An entire room was missing and people seemed okay with that. Years after first noticing this phenomenon the hunt for another place to live started again since the size of our family grew. A new set of houses were being built in the neighborhood and we decided to check them out as a potential buy. In all the houses not only were the dining rooms gone but the kitchens were miniscule. Seems the problem was only getting worse. Upon further investigation, there was indeed a very logical explanation to what was happening in New York City. First the incidence of women divorcing for various reasons has increased drastically over the past few decades. According to the U.S census not only has divorce increased but women deciding not to get married have almost doubled since the 1980s increasing from 26.9 percent in 1986 for women in their twenties to 46.8 percent in 2009 and from 14 percent to 26.7 percent for women in their early thirties1. Since women are increasingly picking up the role of home builder and bread winner, many women no longer stay at home to prepare a big meal for their families since they are the ones in the work force. As a result of more women taking on the role of breadwinner, the kitchen is not utilized as much as it used to be.
