Depression seems to be a common topic for different writers. However, depression can lead to emotional and physical problems, causing sadness in the person that is suffering. For this reason, people with feelings of depression cannot do their activities in a normal way, because they feel life is not worth living; they prefer to stay in his or her loneliness. Writing is a solitary pursuit with little chance to socialize, one may think artists write about depression because they feel depressed. On the other hand, many writers are very famous because of their unique stories, showcasing their personal experiences. Stories written can be a reflection of their own lives, because they are human beings, and they suffer too. They have their problems in life, and they have to face them. Most of them choose to write when they get a feeling of sadness. On the other hand, they may write about sadness based on the other people's experiences; where they just describe what they see around them. Robert Frost does not change this tendency, and he choose to write about depression in his poem, "Desert Places," by using word choice, imagery, and symbolism, to illustrate how depression can make one feel that your life is nothing valuable. Frost affirms the importance of the word choice, to transmit a clear message to the readers. He states clearly the depression felt, for a person that could be the author or someone else. The author uses the words, "lonely," "loneliness," and, "nothing," throughout the poem to transmit his message. This poem tells the readers about sadness by observing a snow-covered field at night. In the first stanza, snow and night show feelings of sadness pass fast. The field with only few weeds and stubble, symbolizes that the narrator cannot forget his or her past because there are still memories. The poet is trying to find some comfort in the night. An example of depression in the second stanza is that the surrounding woods are the only elements of nature in the field. The narrator may feel more depressed for that reason, since they are in the forest without anyone else around them. In the third stanza, the word lonely represents the night; at the end, the narrator will be lonely again with no one to talk with.
