The Downfalls of Polygamy

Polygamy is defined as the condition or practice of having more than one spouse at a time. Though it has existed in many cultures throughout the world, polygamy is still very prevalent in most Islamic societies today. But, many people around the world, especially women, do not think that it is acceptable for one man to have multiple wives; they believe that marriage should be between only two people. It is a destructive choice which leads to loss of whole family and to an unstable life. Patrick Rothfuss said, "Once wife, you're happy, two and you're tired, three and they'll hate each other, four and they'll hate you" (www.goodreads.com). Therefore polygamy is a devastating practice. Some argue that the man should not have multiple wives. The man has a chance to choose his partner and live a happy life forever. So why does he go and marry another woman? First of all, polygamy leads to several psychological problems whether for wife or children. To illustrate, when the wife realizes that there is another women who is involved with her husband, she will automatically be exposed to some psychological problems such as, solitude, depression, jealousy and low-self-esteem. Furthermore, when the child feels like his father became a father to another children and a husband to another women besides his mother, it will make him feel frustrated and as if he has lost his father's protection and caring which may leads to problems in dealing with others or with the father. Secondly, having more than one wife causes many social problems. For example, violence will be practiced from the children and the mother as a result of accumulating feelings toward the father. Also, poverty will unwillingly happen when having more than one wife. To be more specific, the paterfamilias becomes responsible financially of two families.
