Written by Dave Eggers and published by Vintage Books in 2009, Zeitoun explains the true story of how an innocent man, Abdulrahman Zeitoun, survived Hurricane Katrina and the government’s harsh ways. He was even put behind bars for something he didn’t do. In the beginning, Zeitoun heard from his wife Kathy that a hurricane was going to hit New Orleans, Louisiana. He didn’t think anything of it because he had done the same thing many times before: stay home and wait it out while Kathy and the kids flee. Zeitoun did exactly that, but this time while waiting it out he found an old canoe in the garage. The first day after the storm, there was only 2 or 3 feet of water on the ground. Zeitoun paddled out over the clear water and down the street but was stopped by a tree, so he turned around and went home. The day after that, the water had already receded and had been pumped out of the city. The next day, Zeitoun woke up to an astonishing sight. The levees broke and now there were many feet of water draining into his yard. Of the lowest points in the city fifteen feet of water covered some areas. After a few days, Zeitoun had helped some people from their homes with his canoe. He had even seen four men he knew from previous experiences. One day they all met at one of his rental homes down the street from his house when armed men showed up in a large boat. Street cameras weren’t working so whenever police officers saw looters they could only remember what they looked like or their body shape. The armed men arrested the four guys because they looked like looters. Then they were thrown into a makeshift jail. The men were treated like dirt and a few days later they were sent to a maximum-security prison. Zeitoun was finally released and all charges were dropped. The government had to make a jail, so it took a while, though people were dying at the same time. No one else is responsible for the government’s actions. The federal, state, and/or local governments
