ABSTRACT Over the past thirty-five plus years, since 1973 when Roe vs. Wade was passed through Congress and abortion became legal, over 48 million babies have been aborted (1), equaling the population of twenty-five states in America as of the 2010 United States census. Twenty-five states, small as some of them may be. Think about that statistic for a bit and it hits you that is the population of half the country. The debate about whether it should be legal or not is still an ongoing debate in this country and attitudes range drastically. By studying the attitudes of those who have had abortions, the motives and reasoning behind the abortions, and the mental consequences and anguish they may or may not have induced become clearer and manageable for the help they may need. While abortion is not growing problem, it still has significant numbers in America; almost 3,700 per day resulting in approximately 1.3 million a year (3). The reasons for aborting a fetus range dramatically from the mother not thinking they are mature enough to handle a baby, to the mother thinking it will disrupt their future goals (education) to already having children and not wanting another to the smallest percentage having an abortion because of rape or incest (4). Abortions are extremely emotional procedures for the mother and all parties involved, usually. Although some women say they are stable and can handle abortions, mothers and perhaps fathers need help to deal with mental anguish after aborting a baby because it is obvious first time abortionists get extremely emotional at the loss of something that was once apart of them. LITERATURE REVIEW “Abortion is the premature termination of pregnancy by spontaneous or induced expulsion of a nonviable fetus from the uterus.” “After dropping 25% from a high of over 1.6 million in 1990, the number of abortions performed annually in the U.S. has leveled off at about 1.2 million a year. Two independent sources confirm this latest trend: the government’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute (GI), which was once a special researc
