Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States of America. He became the United States president in 1860 during the civil war. Abraham Lincoln was part of the Republican Party. In Abraham Lincoln’s four years of presidency, he had accomplished so much. Abraham Lincoln was the first president in the United States to be assassinated. Abe Lincoln was also on our nation’s penny. During Lincoln’s inauguration speech, he warned the south of what was going to happen. Abraham Lincoln stated, “In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you. You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it” (whitehouse.gov 1). Lincoln built our nation’s Republican Party into a strong national organization. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a one-room log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. When Lincoln was seven years old, his family moved to southern Indiana. Abe Lincoln was only in school for half-a-day because he would have to leave to go to work to support his family. In 1830, Lincoln’s family moved to Macon County in Illinois. There he worked as a post maker and shoe keeper. This is where Lincoln began to take interest in politics. He began to get involved locally, with the Whig Party. He won the election to the state legislature in 1834. Lincoln opposed the spread of slavery to the territories. He also had a vision of the expanding United States. He focused of commerce and cities rather than agriculture. Abe Lincoln taught himself law, and passed the bar examination in 1836. The next year he moved to the newly named state capital, Springfield. For the next few years, Abe worked there as a lawyer. He earned the reputation of being called “Honest Abe”, serving clients ranging from individual residents of small towns to national railroad lines. Abraham Lincoln then met Mary Todd, who was a Kentucky Belle with many suitors, meaning she agreed to marry certain man. He later married Mary Todd in 1842. Abe and Mary later had four sons, and only one survived to adulthood. Abe Lincoln and his wife both shared the love of animals. Abraham Lincoln was elected of many things before he became the United States President. In 1846, Lincoln won the election to the U.S. House of Representatives and began serving his term the following year.
