A stand-your-ground law is a type of self-defense law that gives individuals the right to use deadly force to defend themselves without any requirement to evade or retreat from a dangerous situation. The stand your ground law has come up in the public eye numerous of times. So if there has been such an uproar on it why wouldn’t the states that have that law have it eradicated? Is there a reason why it hasn’t been removed? Is the stand your ground law an effective law? There are plenty of cases that this law has had an effect on and the one that made headlines across the world is the the Trayvon Martin case. Martin was a 17 year old African American boy who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. Trayvon Martin was unarmed, while George Zimmerman, the neighborhood patrol man was. Trayvon was coming back from the store in the iconic black hoodie, and with the iconic Skittles and Arizona. Zimmerman saw Trayvon walking through the neighborhood at night in his black hoodie and Zimmerman automatically thought that he was up to no good. We don’t know if they had gotten into a physical altercation before Trayvon was shot, but that is what they said in court. In court they also had phone calls to 911 when Zimmerman called and the police dispatcher had told Zimmerman not to follow Trayvon, he did not comply with those directions. Then he started to pursue Trayvon, which he was told not to do. In the 911 tape you can hear somebody screaming out for help, and that was a big argument in the case. Was that person screaming Trayvon Martin or George Zimmerman? In the end verdict the jury found George Zimmerman not guilty. After he was found not guilty, he was in the news for other things. He saved a family from a car, but then he was accused of pointing a gun at his wife and his wife's father (Fox News).
