?Guidelines: Analysis of a Film Purpose of Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to reflect your working knowledge of the terms and concepts discussed in class. You will write a 4 to 5 page essay (800 to 1,000 words) analyzing communication issues in a selected film by applying intercultural communication theories and concepts, be prepared to speak about it in class. Steps: 1. Watch a feature length film that deals with intercultural communication issues. 2. Write a short introduction describing what this movie is about: the context, main characters, main ideas, etc. 3. Define the main themes of the movie and analyze them by applying the intercultural communication concepts covered in class. You should apply at least 5 different concepts that apply to the movie’s main theme(s). NB: Among your main themes might be identity (How do the main characters identify themselves? How do their “histories” influence intercultural interactions and how they think of themselves and others?), cultural barriers (Discuss ethnocentrism, stereotyping, prejudice and/or discrimination), cultural dimentions, communication patterns (strategies), nonverbal communication, adaptation/assimilation etc. Each of these themes can be broken down to further concepts (e.g. cultural dimensions by E. Hall, G. Hofstede, etc.). Support your analysis and conclusions by at least three sources relevant to your topic and the concepts you introduce. This paper should not be merely reportorial, in other words do not just regurgitate what happened in the movie.
