Gatsby was a soldier and he is poor. However, in order to get Daisy, he lies to Daisy. He says he is rich and inherits from his family. He believes Daisy is will have relationship with him and thus, it becomes the truth to him. (P149) He loves Daisy but he is dishonest to her. Daisy is the first “nice girl” he has ever seen. Gatsby knows it’s hard to possess high class. But, he chooses Daisy, and believes she is the one for him. This high class is able to satisfy his vanity. Because Gatsby goes to World War One, Daisy can’t wait for too long and she finally married Tom. After Gatsby comes back from the war, he becomes rich from doing illegal things and he decides to use money to buy Daisy back. When the first time Daisy goes to Gatsby’s house, Gatsby leads her to visit the place where he holds his clothes. He shows all different kinds of shirts to one by one to Daisy. (P92) Gatsby throws all the shirts out on purpose. He wants to show Daisy that he becomes rich now. Daisy is mammonish and she loves money. And that is exactly what Gatsby tires to show Daisy. Gatsby doesn’t use his feelings and true love to get Daisy but he chooses to use money to buy her back. Because only by getting Daisy, can Gatsby rises to upper class. However, he never realizes the Daisy is not the Daisy before. By the time when he realizes that, it’s too late. And he pays the prize for his vanity. Tom is a playboy and has a habit of arrogance, which makes him feel he is better than anyone else. His blind ambition makes him do anything to cover his arrogance (P24). Tom insists on Nick to bring him to see his mistress, his supercilious assume that Nick has nothing better to do but to go with him. Tom wants to show Nick how rich he is. His arrogance convinces him that he is better than everyone else. In addition, he doesn’t even want to hide Myrtle, his mistress; he just wants to directly show Nick what he gets beside Daisy.
