Plot The story starts with a long description of the train station surrounded by hills, fields and trees. An American man and his girlfriend Jig is waiting for a train to Madrid. Here, Jig is pregnant and the guy wants her to do abortion. He tries to comfort her by saying that it is a simple operation and everything will be just fine like before but that does not comfort Jig as she wants to keep the baby. At first, she was in a vulnerable state and could not speak of her mind but when the story ends, she rises with her clear voice and decides to keep the baby and moves forward in her life without the American guy as we can assume that the guy does not want to take the responsibility of the baby. Character In the story, Jig is a round character. At first, we see that she depends on the American while taking every single decision but throughout the story, she goes under a transformation and in the end we see that she has confidence in her behavior and is no more dependent on the American. On the other hand, the American is a static character. So, we can say that Jig is the foil character of the American guy. Because we see that the guy is dominating, aggressive, carefree, selfish and independent. On the other hand, Jig is dominated by the guy, submissive, thoughtful, unselfish, depends on the guy. Point of View The point of view of the story is third person omniscient. Setting The setting of this story is in Ebro River Valley, Spain in 1927, during early 20th century. Theme The theme of the story is mainly abortion. The couple faces a situation where it is clear that one partner, Jig, wants to settle down, have the baby, while the other partner, the American does not. The American is more into a carefree life, where no responsibilities and obligations reside. So, it can also be said that there is a lack of communication between them.
