?In 1942, over 878,741 people lost their lives in an all out war that lasted 5 months. This battle was perhaps one of the bloodiest of all time; this was the battle of Stalingrad. Throughout the war, there war many battles that could be named the biggest turning point of World War II, but to many the Battle of Stalingrad stands out, as the largest turning point of World War Two. The Battle of Stalingrad started on August 23, 1942. It started after the 6th army of Nazi Germany started attacking the City of Stalingrad, against Russia (Soviet Union), in an area now known as the Ukraine. The Germans started the attack with heavy bombing from the German Luftwaffe, air force. This reduced the city to rubble, with heavy artillery attacks from German panzer tanks. After the Germans marched in to the city. the battle turned into close quarters combat or building-to-building warfare. This included lots of little assaults and sniper battles. After heavy losses, the 6th army of the Germans and the Red army of Soviet Union poured loads of reinforcements into the city; this resulted in many casualties. By November, the Germans had most of the control of the city, and had pushed the Soviets back to the eastern edge of the city. On the nineteenth of November, the Red army launched and attack on the weak forces of Romania and Hungary, that were protecting the flanks of the Germans. The flanks were overrun, and the German forces were eventually surrounded in the middle of the city. Adolf Hitler ordered for the Germans to stay and fight back. After two months, they surrendered on February 2, 1943, after their ammunition and food were about to run out. Stalingrad was described as the biggest defeat in the history of the German army, and as the bloodiest war of all time. It was the biggest turning point of World War Two. Because of the heavy fighting in Stalingrad, the Germans had to take troops out of other strongholds throughout Russia, to come and fi
