When asked about a bucket list, many people say they want to travel the world. So many people want to explore the world but think the time is not right or that they do not have enough time. When graduating seniors in high school take a gap year, they get the chance to do just this; explore the world. A gap year is a period of time between high school and college where students take the opportunity to take time for themselves and spend it however they choose. Many students spend the time abroad, traveling and exploring a different country. A gap year is all about living life and realizing there is a world of opportunity to be explored. Several benefits come from taking a gap year. For example, individuals gain experiences that can better prepare them for future social and academics, earn money if the student chose to work, learn new skills, volunteer, get ahead on university work, and even experience life away from home before being locked into a dorm or apartment at university (Gap Years: Pros and Cons). However, it all comes down to the student’s choice. Whether the “year” be twelve months or three months; or the time be spent exploring the world or simply working towards a personal goal, it’s all about taking the time for an individual to pursue their dream before the university level (Sarouhan). Whichever direction a student chooses, whether to invest their time in a gap year or to jump right into the university life, it is completely up to the student. It’s always important for an individual to understand their possibilities when choosing to take a gap year. For example, Heather Johnson spent her gap year before graduate school teaching English abroad. Johnson attended the University of Edinburgh in Scotland majoring in speech pathology; however, instead of going straight onto graduate school Johnson traveled to South Korea. After researching several opportunities Johnson found that teaching English in South Korea was the best financial option. As well as teaching, John
