Public use of fireworks are becoming more and more of a problem in Georgia every year. Many states in the United States have already made the move towards making the public use of fireworks illegal, including Georgia. However, in the state of Georgia this law is largely ignored and not strictly enforced. There are many reasons why the public use of fireworks should remain illegal in Georgia, including environmental problems, health issues, potential safety problems, they are a disruption to animals, and to neighbors. First of all, environmental problems are becoming a huge problem caused by the pyrotechnics industry. Fireworks have been known to create various types of pollution such as noise, water, light, and air pollution. The main ingredient in fireworks is gunpowder. Gunpowder is very bad for a person when it is inhaled, especially if someone already has asthma it can be extremely bad for them. According to a recent online article fireworks contain many toxic chemicals. Some of the chemicals that are in fireworks are mercury, arsenic compounds, barium nitrate, and lead dioxide. Mercury (mercurous chloride), which is used as a chlorine donor, contain toxic heavy metals and can build up in the soil and animals. Arsenic compounds, which are used as colorants, contain toxic ash that can cause lung cancer, skin irritation, and wart formation. Barium nitrates, which are used for glittering greens, are very poisonous and the fumes can irritate the respiratory tract. Lead dioxide, which is used as an oxidizer, is very dangerous for kids and unborn babies and is also poisonous to plants and animals (Fireworks - Cheap Thrills with Toxic Consequences). People are not the only ones effected by the toxic chemicals in fireworks, the earth is also effected. The residue from the fireworks can settle in the soil and water, causing environmental damage for years to come. Secondly, the law banning the personal use of fireworks in Georgia should remain in effect because of the fact that there are numerous health problems linked with the use of fireworks.
