Being in solitary confinement is harmful to prisoners. They live in a cramped environment with little or no visibility or fresh air, leaving them in a room with no stimulation and just their thoughts. The prisoner is totally isolated from the other prisoners cutting their social contact to almost nothing, with a very rare visit by family and friends. Being completely dependent on the staff for all their basic needs, every movement they make is controlled and closely watched. “I have seen inmates lose their mind completely because of the sound of a light where they are yelling at the light, cursing at the light, believing that for some reason the [authorities] planted some kind of noise inside the light purposely and so the inmates that ain’t strong minded, don’t have something to hang on to, the light, the sound of the door, can make them lose their mind I found it strange, you know, how can a grown man, a very big, grown man, break down to a light. But that’s what [that place] can do. And once you lose your mind, you don’t know right from wrong. You don’t know that you’re breaking a rule. You don’t know what to do exactly” (Shalev, pg 192) Experts have identified solitary confinement as psychological torture (Bulma, P). The possibly damaging effects of solitary confinement are also recognized in case studies involving prisoners, which view it as an extreme prison practice which should only be used in short periods of time. Due to clear evidence that solitary confinement has an impact on health and welfare, particularly for those with previously known mental health disorders, and that it may also actively cause mental illness. The extent of psychological damage varies and will depend on certain personal factors, duration, environmental factors, and administration control (time out of cell, amount of human contact).
