Malcolm Gladwell was born in England and moved to Canada at a young age. He is now based in New York and currently writes articles for The New Yorker. Although most people do not even know that that is his main job. He is known for his books on management and psychology. Primarily they are written as self-help books for all types and levels of business people. Gladwell has written five books to date along with speaking presentations, specifically the TED series of lectures. His books have been well received by the masses and continue to be top sellers in all markets. He approaches his writings with laying out the basics of how to succeed and what would make you overall just a better employee no matter what level you are in. He uses real life situations and people to explain his theories on how to succeed. In a recent talk on to business people on succeeding, he used the example of a shipping magnate, Malcolm McLean and how McLean was able to transform the shipping industry because he was disruptive, but in a good way, he thought out of the proverbial box and came up with a way to load shipping containers on and off ships. Gladwell’s point is that if you have vision, you have to be somewhat disruptive, in the right way. You have to share your vision, challenge the status quo or the way it has always been done. In his book, Outliers for example he challenges people to understand why people are successful or go after success. Success has many definitions to many people and comes in various forms. Gladwell suggests that if you want to understand why someone is successful in their mind, you need to spend some time with them. You need to look at their family dynamic, and by understanding some of that, you may understand what the drive is for that person to be successful.
