That split second we lose focus while driving may prove to be fatal as almost all driving accidents have proven to be caused by distractions. The rapid growth of technology in the now has revolutionized modern society, allowing us to indulge in a social media world right in the palms of our hands. Driving under the influence is deemed a hazard as it impairs and disrupts the concentration level of the driver. Texting or use of a cellular device poses the same threat of distraction to drivers and leads to harm for everyone on the road just as equal or more to driving under the influence. Texting and driving has become a global epidemic and is an extensive problem that is killing people and taking nations by storm. The growing concern for road safety has made texting while driving a potential risk factor. Driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol poses an equal threat when it comes to road safety. When the law on driving under the influence exists, the same should be attributed to texting and driving. The use of the smartphone while driving has been deemed one of the most prevalent types of car crash in the world. According to some statistics gathered from transport Canada, "There is considerable evidence that cell phone use impairs driving performance, and that this impairment significantly increases collision risk" (e.g., Harbluk et al., 2002; 2007). Furthermore, the majority of Canadians believe that distracted driving is a serious road safety problem (Vanlaar et al., 2007)" (Transport Canada). Over the span of the last decade alone, the number of fatal car crashes attributed to texting while driving has increased.
