Facebook as a Rhetorical Artifact

Using Facebook as an artifact subjected to rhetorical analysis, it helped me understand how people use their social media accounts to express their views, and every person has a different way of conveying what they think to the society. By comparing two Facebook accounts that belongs to two of the most popular public figures in the modern society, Emma Watson and Paris Hilton, these individuals have a different approach to their personality, and also the way they identify their views are completely different to each other. The tone to posts that can be found on Emma Watson’s is more formal than Paris Hilton’s posts as Emma Watson has a campaign regarding gender equality and not content just based on her personal life. Unlike Emma Watson, Paris Hilton’s account is updated on a more regular basis, with little posts as a picture with a view where she is about dine. That being Paris Hilton’s recent post, Emma Watson’s consists of a video, where she talks about an upcoming convention in London for ‘HeForShe’ which is the title of her campaign. Apart from that, Emma Watson’s page consists of pictures and videos of movies, photo shoots etc. featuring her which tells us about her career as an actress and a model as well. Through this, we can analyze that Emma Watson’s posts are not always meant for self-promotion but also regarding her career as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. Paris Hilton’s page contains mostly pictures and videos of activities of her daily life and other content in order to promote her brand where the page’s banner consists an image of her in a blue outfit and next to her in text, is the link to her shop’s website along with the words “Watch. Shop. Share”. The activities which we did in class helped me to use rhetorical analysis properly but did not encouraged me to build a digital identity for myself.
