Body image is one's physical appearance based on self-observation and the reactions of others. The main factors that influence body image issues are Peer pressure, media, low self –esteem, marginalization. It is true that physical appearance correlates with peer pressure and self-esteem. Body image issues have been controversial, especially with the image being passed across to viewers (adolescents). Body image issues leads to self-esteem problems mostly for adolescent girls and this is because the young girls of nowadays are obsessed about their weight. Girls are said to have higher rates of depression than boys because they are unhappy with their body image. It seems more like girls have interpreted their maturing body in a negative manner because they entreat to be thinner than they have probably been in the past. The exposure of regarded body images via magazines, advertisements, well known television shows may encourage teenagers to copy these looks. Although, the main problem is that not every existing adolescent is a similitude of the models and actresses they view through the media. However, some teenagers may take extreme measures to gain the “ideal” body images seen on media. Some of these extreme measures are dieting, immoderate exercising and also surgery. For most adolescent girls to achieve ideal thinness, they begin to limit their food intake, which may lead to eating disorder. Most of the girls suffering from low self-esteem are due to their dissatisfaction with their appearance. Instead of focusing on thinness, it is more crucial to educate youth about nutrition and healthy ways of keeping fit such as exercising and monitored food intake by adults. Adolescents can be encouraged by emphasizing their talents and getting female teenagers to focus less on physical appearance. There are some medias that advocate images of ideal body shapes.
