Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born January 16,1979, in Brooklyn, New York. When she was 11, Aaliyah competed on the television program "Star Search," but she did not take home the prize. Soon after her television appearance, she performed with Gladys Knight, who was the wife of Aaliyah's uncle and manager, Barry Hankerson. In 1994, at the age of 15, Aaliyah launched onto the R&B charts with her first album, “Age A’int Nothing But A Number.” This record, produced by singer R.Kelly, quickly sold a million copies and climbed the charts until it had reached platinum status. Later that year, tabloid reported that teenaged Aaliyah married 27 year old R.Kelly, but Aaliyah denied the union and the marriage was reportedly invalidate. Aaliyah graduated high school in 1997, she released her sophomore album, “One In A Million” (1996).“One In A Million” pictured the 17 year old singer as a Hip-Hop chanteuse with a self-confidence well beyond her years. The album sold two million copies. Aaliyah earned even more remembrance in 1997, when she recorded "Journey to the Past.” Aaliyah also performed a song for the Oscar telecast in 1998.
