I believe that crime rates have decreased because Westfield has provided hundreds of jobs. These jobs give mainly the young/adults the opportunity to earn a living and to stay out of trouble. Employment offers a person the opportunity to interact regularly with law-abiding fellow employees discouraging crime. If a large-scale development such as Westfield was not built in Shepherds Bush, the troublesome youths will be unemployed, thus are more likely to be on the streets causing ‘mischief’. In Westfield there are a wide range of goods from high to low each with a different threshold population, therefore the youths can be selected for a job that best suits them (provides opportunity for all types of people). With Westfield offering jobs for the youths, it helps the dangerous criminals redirect their energies into something productive, therefore reducing crime rates. Furthermore, Westfield has reliable security systems which warns the youths and puts them off breaking the law, hence keeping the rates of crime as low as possible. Westfield is prominent for its great aesthetic appeal. Crime is not attracted as crime tends to occur in derelict areas. As well as providing job opportunities, Westfield contains many recreational facilities examples being: a library, a bowling area, games room and a cinema. These activities mainly target the youths, keeping them out of trouble by occupying them, reducing the crime rates. However Westfield could attract crime in a way as it gives rise to minor crimes such as shop-lifting, theft and pick pocketing. Youths may be attracted to Westfield (for the wrong reasons) as a way to take advantage of the busy atmosphere by pick pocketing and shop-lifting. This questions the overall sustainability of Westfield as crime is a real push factor. As a result of Westfield, I believe that the affluent shoppers are most attracted to the area.
