In “This Old House," David Sedaris utilizes several rhetorical elements to guide readers through his personal changes within the memoir. Sedaris discusses life in the boarding house and how things change. Sedaris' use of imagery helps readers visualize the atmosphere of the essay. In order to express how the other tenants feel about Sedaris, he uses generalization. David Sedaris’ use of diction betrays how he feels about people in the memoir. Therefore with various rhetorical elements combined, Sedaris is creatively able to lead readers through the memoir by showing personal changes. The author’s imagery makes the essay visual to the point where the reader can see various actions within the memior. In this reading the imagery is apparent to the reader, “My life felt like a beautiful dream” (Sedaris, pg4). The tenant’s personalities were so well described that it made the reader feel like they were present in their environment. His language helps clarify the tenant’s actions in the memoir. Sedaris is descriptive throughout the reading, “Late one evening, he came to my door, and when I opened it he grabbed me around the waist and lifted me off the floor” (Sedaris, pg6).While reading the memoir, readers can visualize antiques crowded around the boarding house, “It came as no surprise that she bought and sold antiques, or “dabbled” in them, as she said” (Sedaris, pg3). Imagery provides what a reader can see in his or her mind’s eye about a written text. Sedaris’ language is used to convey texture and vividness to the reader. Sedaris uses logic generalization to express the tenant’s feelings, which can be useful to the reader by getting them to realize their inner thoughts and help them better visualize the tenants personalities .The other tenants seem to reject all aspects of the landlord’s and the narrator’s way of life as it was almost alien to them, Chaz calls Sedaris and the landlady “Individual f
