Introduction For this last speech, I had such a hard time deciding what I wanted to spend my last five to seven minutes in front of this classroom speaking about. I listened to a million speeches and I thought to myself “how could I leave you all with something that is important to me?” Body There was this girl I knew who grew up in a broken home. This is no news to our generation. Her mother was a single parent struggling with problems of her own, problems she solved with alcohol. She was not in a position to be raising two children. The young girl had no idea the severity of her mothers drinking problem until her mothers problems became her own. When at the age of eight she had to take care of her toddler brother when she had not mastered the concept of taking care of herself let alone another human being. She did not understand the severity of her mothers problem until she had to start picking her mother up of the off the hallway floor at three in the morning. She didn’t understand the severity of the problem until her mother would disappear for days and weeks at a time. She did not understand the severity of her problem until Child Protective Services came knocking on the door. That’s when she understood. This young girl did everything in her power to stay home with her mother and her brother together. This young girl felt defeated. With her family in another country her and her brother were bounced around into seven foster homes. She wanted her mother to have the same confidence in herself that she had to believe she could be better as the young girl believe Her mother kept it together long enough to get her children back but the cycle just repeated itself. The young girl finally accepted that the problem was no longer her own and way to big for her to solve so she learned how to cope.
