Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds, and it is thought that 25 attempts are made for every completed suicide. In the story Romeo & Juliet, suicide was undertaken and overlooked. The same may be true for this generation. The only way to prevent it is to make the subject known and know how to prevent it. All teens are at risk for suicide due to the the similar factors associated with the stressors causing suicide. The similar reason found between suicides is “the pressure and stress to fit in socially, perform academically, and act responsibly”. ( “National Alliance on Mental Illness”) These pressures can affect everyone and usually does at one point or another. Some of the other contributing factors include psychological disorders like depression, bipolar disorder, and insomnia. (NAMI) Major changes like divorce, moving, and financial changes can cause thoughts of suicide in all age groups. This may also be a time when teens find their sexual identity and are experimenting with relationships. This can be a stressful time period because they don’t necessarily know how to act when in a relationship. Some of the more common factors may only be feelings of distress, irritability, or just a general agitation. How to help a friend if you don’t know the warning signs? If we look at the methods involved in some of the suicide cases you can identify when the thought has crossed someones mind. The five most common methods of suicide are: using firearms, suffocation or hanging, jumping, poisoning or overdose, and cutting. Some warning signs may be talking about the idea of death or suicide, giving hints that they won’t be around anymore, giving away possessions, and pulling away from friends or family. People engage in risky activities, have trouble thinking clearly or just have a change in eating and sleeping patterns.
