Effective Advertisment - Friends Furever

Do people really pay attention to advertisements? When I’m watching my favorite TV show and commercials come on that is my time to snap back into reality. I’ll go to the restroom or grab a snack, or check my phone - sort of like taking a break. I really don’t watch commercials unless there’s something interesting or funny that grabs my attention. Usually people stop listening to the TV at this point for whatever reason, it is not an uncommon habit. Even companies who create these advertisements know that people will do things like this during commercials. So what can these advertisers do to capture their audience’s attention? There are so many factors to consider and techniques to use, all for the purpose of successfully persuading the audience. Personally, the commercials that have any affect on me are those that use animals. Especially if the message of the advertisement is inspirational and there’s a nice song playing in the background (totally heart capturing). Which exactly explains a commercial I recently came across known as “Friends Furever”. This is an advertisement made by Android, which is promoting their message “Be together. Not the same”. To demonstrate this saying they have shown different clips of incompatible animals getting along, like a cat and a duck. I didn’t have to think twice about why this advertisement was so enjoyable. This introduces the first technique I noticed being used in this advertisement known as Pathos. Pathos is a technique advertiser’s use to appeal to the audience’s emotional side. Most of the time it’s used in television commercials. The reason for that, stated in Laura Carroll’s Backpacks vs. Briefcases is simply because it is one of the fastest ways to “persuade the audience in a short amount of time” (Carroll 53).
