Day by day, television has more importance in our lives. Although, through misuse, television can be something damaging, for the majority I don’t believe it is something bad. We need to use it with moderation and in a suitable way to obtain the benefits from television without it causing us harm. One of the most controversial matters about television is its effect on children. It’s true that programs with violence or sex can have bad effects on children’s minds and their behavior. However, programs with these traits should only be shown after nine o’clock in the evening. From my point of view it is the responsibility of the parents to ensure that their children only see suitable programs and put a limit on the hours that they can see them. A another argument is the one about television and health. It is obvious that other activities are more beneficial than watching the telly and it’s important that everybody does a sport or some form of exercise and not sit in front of the telly only. If the television had not started to be so important in our lives, most of us would have been more sporty and would have had more beneficial pastimes like reading. However, sometimes people just want to relax. For example, after a difficult week at school, I only want to watch TV because it is relaxing, it entertains and I don’t have to think much. The important thing is that you have a balance between television, work and exercise and in this way the television can be something good. Furthermore TV can be educational. It shows documentaries for every topic and earlier in the day there are children’s programs that help to teach them the alphabet or numbers for example. Not everything is rubbish. TV can also promote and develop passions and interests like music – on the music channels – or nature – in documentaries. With such a variety, there are programs to interest everybody.
