The stadium is packed. The quarter back receives the ball. The time is winding down to zero. He has a receiver running the deep route and finds space. As the ball is caught by the receiver he is tackled and falls inside the end zone for the game winning touchdown. The stadium erupts with excitement. As the receiver leaves the field he is bombarded by interviewers and fans. He removes his jersey, pads, and cleats. He changes into his dress clothes and gets on the game bus. The game ended late so the team missed their free meal time. As he returns to his room he also returns to the sad reality that he has no food in his room and is feeling super hungry. Because he spends all of his time practicing, studying, and going to class, he is unable to keep a job. This leads to the inability to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Unhealthy lifestyles lead to injuries that lead to athletes losing their scholarships and then they drop out of college. Paying athletes is not the issue; making sure students athletes are taken care of on and off the field is the issue. Providing students athletes with a value card that would only be accepted by local businesses would help provide a solution to this issue. Paying college athletes in return for their commitment and athletic abilities is a common topic that comes up. The criticism surrounding this topic is what makes up the common issue. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) does not want to pay players because of the overall cost and threat that it would bring to programs and athletes. Money is a power that has positive incentive up front but has negative effects in the end. Such power would lead to very unethical decision from athletes and would cause programs to become internally destroyed. Reasons such as these are why the NCAA does not want athletes to be paid by their program. The idea of a value card is to not pay the athletes in a paycheck but still allow athletes to receive money to help
