“The Hot House: Life Inside Leavenworth Prison” was a book by a reporter, Pete Earley, who decided to go inside a federal prison to examine the life of inmates and the prison’s correctional staff. While reading the book, you realize how a prison can be comparable to what we have spoken about in our lectures. There are certain issues that enter our heads when discussing prison, such as gangs, protection, violence, tattoos, weapons, and chaos. Ironically, one thing we don’t pay as much attention to is the correctional staffs, which is generally outnumbered by the inmates, yet control almost every aspect of the inmates’ lives. In Earley’s book, there were noble moments between the guards and the inmates, but also cruel moments where we question if they were part of the reason why the prisoners became more violent. Pete Earley shows to us how dangerous prisons actually are and what is important to know about them coming in as an inmate. Throughout the book, gangs were seen as an imperative part to understand when we discuss prison. The gang that was regularly mentioned was Scott’s gang, the Aryan Brotherhood, which was a white supremacy gang formed in the late 1960s. Earley was confident in saying Scott was part of the gang due to different tattoos on him that were recognized as Aryan Brotherhood tattoos. An astonishing characteristic about Scott was that he did not want people to know he was in a gang. When thinking about prison, a person would expect an inmate would let his presence in a gang be known due to the fear it would bring fear to the other inmates and prison guards. However, Scott didn’t need to admit he was part of the gang because everyone already knew he was in it, and gave him a lot of respect for being in Aryan brotherhood. Aryan Brotherhood had rival gangs around the prison, such as the Black Guerilla family, and was formed to protect the whites from getting hurt (Earley Page 90) by other races, but generally from other gangs. As years went by, they became one of the most feared gangs in prisons around the world. Even though this gang takes up less than 1% in prisons, it is responsible for 18% of all murders that occur in prison, which include their own gang members and prison guards (Aryan Brotherhood, Page 2). Thus, gangs play an enormous role once an inmate enters a prison and if an inmate has a long prison sentence, a gang is one of the few ways he can obtain protection. Protection is not the first thing that comes to our minds when thinking about prison, but for inmates, it could be one of the vital ways to survive and make it through your prison sentence. Without protection, you would feel like you are in
