Co-curricular activities are activities that are planned for students after school through activities in clubs and societies. Students in school are required to take part in at least one uniformed society and a club. The 1Student 1Sports (1Murid 1Sukan or 1M1S) policy introduced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) aims to produce balanced individuals as valuable human resources for the country. In my opinion, co-curricular activities play an important role in a student’s life and they are certainly not a waste of time. First and foremost, co-curricular activities provide a chance for students to learn about themselves. Without exposing students to activities, they may never know what kind of characteristics or talents they have within. Some students are unable to shine in the classroom but they are superb athletes and musicians. Co-curricular activities provide an avenue for them to become fulfilled individuals. It is not unusual that we see students doing extraordinarily well in sports and representing the school or even nation to compete with other athletes regionally or even globally. Apart from that, students are able to develop other skills not learnt in the classroom or beyond textbooks. Some crucial skills that are required to be equipped in a student like interpersonal skills, living skills or survival skills can be acquired through co-curricular activities. Students learn how to interact and communicate with others better when they are involved in group activities. They have to learn how to deal with all kinds of situations and resolve them with the optimal solution. The students who join scouts activities learn survival skills in nature when they go camping. St. John ambulance members are required to equip themselves with first-aid knowledge that may help them save a life.
