Mary Astell (1666-1731) was a British writer and feminist. Astell gained respect as an intellect despite her gender and homeschooling. Astell often expressed her conservative opinion regarding political and theological matters. She is well known for her books such as “A Serious Proposal to the Ladies” and “Some Reflections Upon Marriage.” Philosophers have various views on human nature. Astell’s view on male nature towards women is vividly expressed in “Some Reflections Upon Marriage”. A woman’s life is basically controlled by her husband. She is forced to stay home, cook, clean, bear children, and not allowed to get a proper education, because getting a proper education, and going to work is considered manly. Woman’s only expected aspiration in life is to be a house wife. Men expect to marry and be happy yet they don’t marry for love, “And as men have little reason to expect happiness when they marry only for the love of money, wit, or beauty.” This has been the preconceived expectations of men for generations. Women have the capability to be just as good as or even better than men. Men often commit acts of selfishness against women. “He who has the Sovereign Power does not value the Provocations of a Rebellious Subject.” Men believe they have all of the power in the relationship. They think they have the right to do as they please. Their selfishness towards women is not allowing them to prosper and restrain them from greater things. “But alas! What poor woman is ever taught that she should have a higher design than to get her a husband? Heaven will fall in of course; is she makes but an Obedient and Dutiful wife, she cannot miss of it.” Women could have had much more of an impact on society if only they were allowed to be educated. Today men and women are treated more equally, yet in some aspects men are still put above women such as receiving more pay for the same job as a woman! Men are selfish. Wha
