Band of Brothers seizes events of soldiers fighting in World War II. I have read many books before about World War II and this one is my favorite. I really liked this one because of the way it was written. I enjoyed reading the book in the eyes of the front line soldier, the privates, non-coms, and officers. Ambrose used interviews as his main source of information. He spoke to each of the living members of Easy Company. Ambrose visited these men’s homes all around the country. He stayed for a couple of days with each soldier. Ambrose was in constant contact with the men of Easy Company by mail and sometimes-spent hours on the phone interviewing them. Ambrose used the journals Easy Company men kept and the letters they sent to their families as resources for his book. On top of all of this he used many books as references to help him out. This book is special because it really concentrates on the lives of these men. It specifically relates to the History of a small unit of paratroopers known as Easy Company, 506 Regiment, and 101st Airborne. This book starts with the training of these men at Camp Toccoa, Georgia. Another thing that made me enjoy this book was that these men were true soldiers. They did it for the excitement and the honor. There was money involved but not a lot, definitely not enough for me to go through what these men did. “In Normandy between 10 and 20 percent of the men in rifle companies suffered some form of mental disorder”(P. 203). Every single person is pushed to their limits. These guys did not want to just be any ordinary draftee; they wanted to be the best. This book amazed me by explaining the physical effort required in basic training. I personally would not be able to make it as far as any of these guys so I am very impressed when the book talks about what these men are put through and how they don’t give up.
