Class Speech The cost of many things at UNLV are going up due to the poor economy and the value of the dollar going down. You can talk to anyone on the street, in your community, and your own family that the inflation in the country is a major problem. Now one thing that inflation affects in a major way is the cost of a higher education. I am not going to talk about the four percent rise every year in tuition costs at UNLV, but the actual inflation of services on the campus which include but are not limited to the POD, the Library, the Student Recreation and Wellness Center, etc These services are some of the most used on campus, and they have a higher price tag on them on campus compared to the surrounding stores. This is a problem that needs to be addressed and examine the reasons behind why it is more expensive. The most useful service to a student that lives on campus or even a commuter that needs something in an instant is the POD. The POD is UNLV’s convenience store that holds a wide assortment of items that students might need to make their stay on campus better. The stores are located in the Student Union and the Dining Commons. The POD in the Commons, which has later open hours in order to directly serve residents, carries grocery items such as milk, coffee, soups and snacks as well as some toiletries. The only thing that is wrong with this essential easy to access convenience store is the price tag that most items are sold at. As you can see in the bar graph the Rebel Yell compared prices of popular products from POD markets and four nearby retailers: Vons, Cirkle K, Target and 7-11. They found that on average, POD markets’ prices were inflated by 105 percent, with a markup on all items except for Häagen-Dasz ice cream.
