Violating Social Norms

Society is shaped by norms and customs. Many norms are followed without opinion or realization that it is being done because it is “normal” for us to be following it. One norm that is an understood rule that is followed is how one behaves in an elevator. For example, it is normal to face front, stand with a respectable distance away from the person next to you, and not stare. Being polite is acceptable with a greeting or so but normally that is all. I violated this norm by standing very closely to people as they entered the elevator and staring at them. When a social norm is broken, people may respond with alarm, humor, fear, irritation, or an array of other emotions. While I violated the social norm of elevator etiquette, I had a few different reactions. At first I began with entering the elevator and standing directly adjacent to someone as closely as I could. This was uncomfortable and I know it was more uncomfortable for the person or group I did it too. I did this several times with similar reactions from the different people. The first person was a businesswoman on the phone. She was very uncomfortable, looked irritated and was getting upset. She asked, “Are you getting off this floor?” I did not answer and then she said, “Ok I will!” The second time was a male and he was getting upset as well. When he entered he tried to move away from me and I moved closer. He at first laughed and asked, “Do you need something?” I did not answer. He laughed and smirked. I could tell he felt awkward and didn’t want to be rude so he politely asked me to move away and I just stared at him. Luckily his floor was the next floor and he exited the elevator. I did this several more times with the same reactions. However there was one situation that was different than the others.
