Sula, a novel written by Toni Morrison, is a book that is about a black female named Sula, and the various events that go on throughout her life. Sula, along with many other characters like her, live in a black neighborhood called “The Bottom.” A majority of the various events that went on throughout Sula’s life were her fault, but in her defense, she did not know any better because of her past. Sula became the woman she did because of the people she was around and the events that went on during her childhood. These were the major factors that made her who she was today. After reading Toni Morrison’s novel, you could say that Sula grew up faster than most children did. This was because of the things she saw and heard as a child. Since she grew up so fast, it was almost as if she had lost her childhood entirely. For example, when Sula was only three years old, she lost her father to death. After her father had passed away, Sula’s mother, Hannah, was left without a husband. Hannah had a major problem, which was that she always needed attention from men. Because Hannah had a serious passion for men, this led to her having many affairs with many different men. However, she never would build any type of relationships with any of them. Naturally, as children we are curious about different things that go on in our lives. So, Sula being her curious self would often watch her mother’s interactions with these men and would understand from this that her mother found pleasure in men. There are many other events that went on during Sula’s life. Another incident that took place during Sula’s childhood was the time when Sula heard one of her mother’s conversations. One day, Sula overheard her mother talking to another women, telling her that she loved Sula, but did not like her.
