Also visitors from Malaysia and Indonesia fly domestically, they come from the mainland or other islands. Tourism is very important in Borneo, however it has pros and cons. It is important for Borneo from an economic point of view. Once tourist are in Borneo they spend money on hotels, restaurants and shops. The facility will help the economy, help the locals to make money. This will happen everywhere shops, restaurants or public transport. The culture in Borneo attracts more tourist to come. The indigenous people have many ethnic tribes, the tourist will experience their culture. On the other hand there are also disadvantages that tourism can create. Tourism can destroy the environment, due to building hotels or other tourist facilities. Due to destroying the environment it can also mean a lot of pollution will occur because of constructions for infrastructure. Crime can also increase to tourism: prostitution or drug dealing. Crime occurs because of a gap between poor locals and rich tourists. These examples might lead into a habit in Borneo due to the quick money making. Borneo’s greatest area is the rainforest, it is the oldest rainforest in the world and is the largest in Asia. The rainforest also contains valuables, rice can be found in the forest as well as tobacco, pepper, sweet potato, coconuts, sugarcane, coffee and rubber, all of those sources are growing there and can be harvested and sold. Palm oil is also one of Borneo’s most successful source, that can be found in the rainforest. Palm oil is an ingredient or a vegetable oil that can be found almost everywhere: shampoo, ice cream, margarine, lipstick, candles and also in your breakfast cereals. Palm oil is famous, because it is being used all around the world. Palm oil can also be bought as a sustainable product. Sustainable palm oil helps prevent deforestation in Borneo. But should Borneo really rely on palm oil or tourism to keep their economy stable? Palm oil production and plantation has been clearing a lot of nature in Borneo.
