Introduction Proper engineering has the potential to improve the community in almost any case. But, proper engineering consists of acts being done safely and with a positive purpose. Engineers are frequently placed in difficult situations, where the interests of clients and the public can conflict. This leads to the development of intense decision-making and problem solving skills. Furthermore, engineers have the primary responsibility to “hold paramount the safely, health and welfare of the public” (NSPE 2007, 2). A lot of trust in bestowed upon engineers, and to maintain the reputation of the profession, one must conduct themselves honorably and ethically, always considering how their decisions affect those around them. It is imperative that ones best judgment is always used while decision making. Description of Case Study The case study of focus consists of an engineer, namely Engineer A, and a biologist who have different views about an environmental issue. Their debate takes place over a piece of property near a wetland area. Here, developers are looking to transform this property into a residential condominium. The developers hire Engineer A, a principle of an environmental engineering firm, to give his thoughts on the situation and prepare an analysis. While the firm is analyzing the case, a biologist from the engineering firm sees a potential issue. He confronts Engineer A about the condominium project and states that there is a threat posed to the environment. There is a certain bird species living in the wetland area that could be in danger if the project happens. The bird species is not an ‘endangered species”, but by the federal government environmental regulators, it is considered to be a “threatened species” (NSPE 2008, 1).
