Undernutrition accounts for 45% of all deaths among children under 5 years of age globally (Ayoya, p. 1). And for many years malnutrition was said to be a huge concern in the United States. Individuals were receiving too little amounts of food, but currently it seems to be the complete opposite. People are consuming too much food which is causing the health issue obesity. Obesity is an adverse health condition characterized by an excessive increase in body fat caused by a sustained positive energy balance over time (Obregón, Pettinelli, and Santos, p. 1). In adults, obesity is defined as a BMI?greater than or equal to?30 (Ogden et al, p. 1). Between 2008 and 2011, 23.3% of men and 23.9 % of women were obese (Wirth, Wabitsch, and Hauner, p. 1). But currently today, more than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of U.S. adults are obese (Ogden et al, p. 2). This medical problem has been debated whether it is a disease or not. Obesity is not a disease because factors that lead to obesity are able to be controlled. An individual can regulate how much one eats, what they consume, how much exercise they participate in, and what type of environment they’re exposed too. As one grows from a young child to a young adult, their bodies are changing. As they change and get bigger, so do their stomachs. One begins to consume more and more food at every meal and even beginning to have more snacks in between the meals. When one is young, their bodies are able to metabolize the food put into the body quicker. But as they continue to grow, their metabolism slows and one must be conscious of how much food they are eating. Over eating can lead to obesity because consuming more calories than what the body can metabolize can lead to “sitting” calories that just stay in the body and are stored as fats. But things like fruits and vegetables have recommended amounts to be consumed per day. Siani et al found that 63 and 78% of children two to nine years old do not consume the recommended number of servings of fruits and vegetables (p. 3). The recommended daily intake of fruits is 2 cups and for vegetables it is about 2 ½ cups. It is good to consume healthy foods but ones diet is limited to the amount of calories taken in. Women between the ages of 19-30 should intake about 2000 calories per day and men 19-30 years of age should intake about 2200. Everyone is different because everyone has different lifestyles allowing one person to exercise more than another. Knowing how much food an individual consumes is one way to avoid becoming obese. Regulating how much an individual eats is important, but what is being put into the body is more detrimental. There are all kinds of foods and drinks out there that can lead one to gain weight. Th
