John Winston Ono Lennon wanted to live in a world free of prejudice and discrimination. He put special messages in his songs to connect with the world. John, along with his wife, Yoko Ono, sang peace songs and staged plenty of bed ins to try and influence others in the world to stop all the hatred. Lennon had a very difficult childhood. From being abandoned by his father, then almost being abducted, to later losing his mother in a car accident, Lennon’s life was like a roller coaster. John Lennon was born on October 9th, 1940 in Liverpool, United Kingdom. His father, Alfred, was working on a ship away from home when he was born. Upon his return, he "tried to take John away from his mother, Julia, when she refused to restart her life with him" (John Lennon Portfolio). This left John scarred because he had to chose with which parent he would like to live. He chose his mother, and in order to keep him safe, Julia gave up John to her sister, Mimi. Although John had little to no contact with his father, he kept a close relationship with his mother. She found time to teach him to play the banjo which influenced John for his love of music. In 1958, John's mom was struck and killed by a driver who was believed to be a drunk, off-duty cop. Aunt Mimi's household was very strict. At school, John didn’t care much. He drew pictures or wrote about his teachers and classmates. After Mimi observed John's rebellious behavior, the only chance she knew of a good future for him, was to get "the headmaster of the Quarry bank school to write a letter of recommendation for John to the Liverpool Art College, because of his drawings" (John Lennon Portfolio), but by the mid-50s, John’s musical interest sparked after the spread of American rock and roll in the UK.
