Lena St. Clair is the daughter of Clifford and Ying­-ying St. Clair. All of the characters in “The Joy Luck Club” leave a profound impact on their reader in a certain way, and in Lena’s case it was the emphasis on the mother/­daughter relationship. Lena and her mother Ying­-ying struggled a lot throughout their stories, but in the end they give you a better understanding of why their relationship is so complicated. Through different experiences and discussions with other characters, the readers are left with more of an impression of Lena because her stories are so relatable. In the chapter “The Voice From the Wall” Lena talks about all of the myths her mother told her as a way to stop Lena from doing bad things within her life. One day her mother told her, “You must not walk in any direction except for school and the back home.” When Lena asked why Ying-ying said, “Because it is too terrible to consider. A man can grab you off the streets, sell you to someone else and make you have a baby,” (pg 109). Lena knew this was not true, but since Lena often lied when translating for her mother, she knew her mother was only trying to prevent bad things from happening, just like herself. On page 113 of “The Voice From the Wall” Lena starts to speak about the arguing she hears through the wall in her bedroom. It’s always between the mother and daughter that live next door. She describes their first argument she hears as “Someone was killing. Someone was being killed. Screams and shouts, a mother had a sword high above a girl’s head and was starting to slice her life away, first a braid, then her scalp...” Lena thought the girl next door was being killed everyday, but when she saw her, the girl did not have one wound on her. Lena thought that she knew a deep, dark secret of the girl’s and would watch her every move whenever she saw her. Lena pitied and worried for the older girl. Later, Lena’s mother miscarrie
