Throughout history, there have always been people with unique opinions and perspectives; those who challenge what's considered the societal norms of their culture. Those people that go against the grain, the consensus opinion and choose to believe in something even though it may be viewed as unpopular or even dumb or a absurd way of thinking. In Lu Xun’s story “Diary of a Madman,” it gives a great depiction of how society views these people, and how these people view society along with the hardships that come a long along their beliefs. In the story “Diary of a Madman," a man returns home after a very long time. When he returns he sees that’s people are giving him strange looks, almost as if they were trying to intimidate him or as if he had committed some egregious crime. “When I made my way out the front gate this morning-ever so carefully- there was something funny about the way the venerable old man Zhao looked at me: seemed as though he was afraid of me and yet, at the same time, looked as though he had it in for me. “Even children looked at the man this way. The man was bewildered and had no idea why all these people were giving him such disdainful glances, until later when he found out the villages dark secret. The man discovered that the village he had returned to was actually a village full of cannibals; even the mans brother was a cannibal. The man tried to understand how all the people of these could live like this and even researched there history but all he found was a dark history of children eating and sacrifices. The man was horrified and overwhelmed at his findings. As soon as he found out about the villages history and way of life he spoke out against it.
