Relationships and roles change as parent’s age and children mature. This role change often affects family either negatively or positively. In the story, “A Devoted Son,” the author Anita Desai renders the relationship between Rakesh and his father, Varmaji. She annotates how the relationship transitions as the sons and father’s roles and responsibilities are reversed. Rakesh’s parents did not grow up with education. However lack of education did not deter Varmaji. Instead he was determined to actuate Rakesh’s education. The vegetable vender was first pleased, when his son touched his feet, after scoring highest in his medical school. When neighbours and friends are invited for the celebration of his son’s success, this further manifests Varmaji’s pride towards his son as he further elucidates how his son’ s first reaction was to kiss his feet. To some of his neighbors Varmaji gave himself airs as they were envious of his son’s achievement. Rakesh is showered with gifts of ‘halwa’ and fountain pens enough to last a year. When his medical school is completed Rakesh wins a scholarship to further his education in the USA. His father is quick to confirm that is it is not ‘America’ rather, ‘USA’. As he ventures to the USA he gains experience by working for some of the country’s prestigious hospitals. This further relays to his family as they are admired in the village. Rakesh return to his native home in the village where his brothers and sisters embrace him. His mother is most proud as she acclaims she is happy that he did not marry a foreigner as the neighbours do. She has chosen a woman for Rakesh and it pleases when they marry. Rakesh acquires employment in the city hospital. He is promoted to the board of directors however he soon opens his own clinic.
