Born October 27,1971 in Manoguayabo, Dominican Republic, Pedro Jaime Martinez became a Major League pitcher for the Dodgers, Expos, Red Sox, Mets and the Phillies. He was an ace at the top of the starting rotation. Almost every pitcher in the Major Leagues are about 6 feet in height but Pedro was 5’11. He became very famous when he pitched in the 1999 All-Star Game in two innings, he struck out the first five of six batters he faced. The game resulted in a win for the American League by the final score of 4-1. Manager Joe Torre gave the trophy to Pedro as MVP for the game. When Pedro was eight, his parents divorced. They treated his brother Ramon as if he was the man of the house. At age 15, he was making money pitching all around the Santo Domingo area. In 1984, Ramon was selected to compete in the Summer olympics in Los Angeles. Ramon was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers and sent to their academy in the Dominican Republic. Pedro went to one practice with Ramon at the Dodgers camp and he got discovered pitching. As Pedro was leaving the park a guy from the name Ralph Avila a scout from the Dodgers saw this 13 year old who can throw 80 mph. Pedro was still too young so Ralph couldn’t sign him yet but he told him to keep working and he will have the chance to play for the Dodgers like his brother. When Pedro grew up and went to another practice with his brother, Ralph was their and signed him. He spent 2 more years pitching for the Dodgers in the Dominican Republic. In 1990, the Dodgers assigned Pedro to their Pioneer League team in Great Falls, Montana.Pedro was the team’s best pitcher and ranked as the league’s #3 prospect after going 8-3 in 14 starts. Ramon on the other hand had come into his own as a major leaguer, winning 20 for the Dodgers in his first full year in the starting rotation.
