In comparing these two different documents, “The Arthashastra” and “The Declaration of Independence,” one of the things I had noticed was that there were removed passages of the final draft Jefferson wrote about slavery. It is very descriptive and horrifying to realize the King of Great Britain condoned the use of slaves for plantation owners and ordinary citizens to own in the thirteen colonies. What Great Britain did to the American colonies was definitely not right, especially the slavery and taxation of the colonial citizens. I found myself being more intrigued with Jefferson because of the Revolutionary War and “The Declaration of Independence” and that by the time “The Civil War” between the North and South was fought that slavery was very much still an issue. Therefore, both of these documents bring important information whether it to inform the government or the public on how to pursue our rights as citizens. Kautilya wrote the political manual "The Arthashastra" which gave advice to a tyrannical king in learning to maintain wealth and power while governing the kingdom to secure the contentment of the citizens (35). Thomas Jefferson wrote “The Declaration of Independence” as a bargaining plea to break away from parliamentary rule of Great Britain to a presidential democracy (52).
