Materialism is a social phenomenon of which most people in a society have a great desire in acquiring material goods. To some extent, this shows the greed of people. It is widely discussed whether it is good or bad. In my opinion, materialism does more harm than good to our society. Being materialistic causes inflation and affects social harmony. When the demand for material goods continuously increases, the price of different goods will rise. In other words, inflation will occur. Unequivocally, the rich and middle class are still able to afford a basic quality of life. Yet on the other hand, it is a disaster for the poor. Their life will merely get tougher and tougher without solutions to improve their quality of life. The poor will be dissatisfied and may even detest the government and the higher class. Social harmony is harmed, which is bad to a society. In addition, people will lose the habit of saving money. They will get into trouble when there is an emergency case where money is needed but may be unable to cope with the situation. For example, if there is a financial crisis in the future, people may lack money to meet basic living need or even get bankrupt, the economy may eventually collapse. Another negative aspect of materialism is the rise in number of crimes, especially for youth and the poor. In a materialistic society, youth may want to follow the social trend, as well as the effect of marketing an advertising of big brands, they may try to commit crime to attain what want due to a lack of money. The poor are also desirous of a better life. The number of robberies, burglaries will definitely increase. Not only will social harmony be harmed, but also the reputation of the city/country will be worsened. Thirdly, people’s productivity may be lowered which thus affects the economy on the grounds that materialism affects one’s emotion and feeling.
